Watchmen Chapter VIII: Old Ghosts
VIII.3.2 "Spirit of '77" -- in Moore and Gibbons' world, this refers to riots following a police strike in protest against vigilante superheroes; but the actual riots of the late seventies were in Alan Moore's England ("Guns of Brixton"), not the U.S. How do these worlds connect? VIII.4.3-4 Uncovering the corporate interlocks behind "Pyramid Deliveries". A graph of the conspiracy. VIII.8.8 Detective finds "Sweet Chariot" sugar cubes in Dreiberg's apartment: link to Rorschach. More in VIII.9.7. VIII.10.1-6 "Honor is like the hawk" (New Frontiersman headline). Compare Dreiberg's calendar, VIII.9.5. VIII.11.1-6 Halloween. Hira Manish sketches the "alien." Max Shea and Manish discuss the scene in the supposed SF movie "where the young chew their way out of their mother's womb." Design for creature incorporates shape of female sexual parts. This resemblance is reinforced by Max Shea's references to baby-making and "family resemblance." See also vagina dentata in anti-rape poster held up by Joey the cabbie (chapter XI). VIII.12.4 TV interview in background: Doug Roth of Nova Express reveals that his magazine is funded by Pyramid Deliveries. VIII.18.9 References to the Twilight Zone, The Shadow (describing Rorschach's world, walking through the prison wards). VIII.23.3 "Deus ex machina" as Jon appears in Dreiberg's house -- this is literally true of Dr. Manhattan, god from the machine: "Yes, I suppose it is..." VIII.27.5 Dialogue from 1985 apparently in photo from 1940s (or is it a flashback?). VIII.28.1 Hollis Mason's face shadowed by statuette that is about to become his murder weapon. Legend on statue says "In Gratitude." Talk about being hit over the head with irony... VIII.Doc.4 New Frontiersman paste-up. Missing writers and artists: Leith (architect), Manish (painter), March (SF writer), Paley (composer), Furnesse (geneticist), Deschaines (psychic medium). |
