Like the rest of Media America, Newsweek doesn't like Mr. Mitnick. They much prefer the good witch of the west, Tsutomu Shimomura, reality's answer to Hiro Protagonist in Snow Crash. Quoting Shimomura, Newsweek wonders "what is 'broken' in Mitnick." To a hacker like Shimomura or Mitnick, the word "broken" is deep to the point of eschatology -- as in, "Oh wow, what a broken concept that is." The word describes a fundamental or cosmic condition. Hackers use it the way Bill and Ted used "bogus," or the way Jonathan Edwards used "fallen."
