So what work doesn't retain such traces? Is this document that you're reading now "true" hypertext simply because it was written in a network of nodes and links? Doesn't it have its own linear and hierarchical strucures? The difference between documents composed in print and documents authored in hypertext may be one of degree rather than kind. The "traces" of linearity will always be present: it's a question of how important they are to the structure of the work.
