Color Codes |
|
Color associations are
easy to use for orientation when colors are used as a systematic
code to label the major
subdivisions of the information hierarchy.
To be effective, the code must use colors
that are easy to distiguish from each other, even when all the colors in
the system are not visible. Follow these guidelines to establish
appropriate color choices:
base color choices on the triadic system of
color harmony
select hues with relatively high chroma
use medium levels of brightness
The number of distinct colors the code
requires necessarily determines what choices will be optimal. For
suggestions, see Color Schemes.
| The code must be
applied consistently. It is likely to be learned and retained better if
the colors used to establish a code are applied to more than one element
of each display. For example, in the diagram, color is applied to
the primary headings, buttons, borders and other elements to help users
recognize that color is being used to affiliate groups of nodes. |
