We need to develop a broader and richer sense of the context or scope of "the task:" what people are in fact doing when they are reading, writing, making meaning. We need to attend more closely to: how iconic significations work with verbal signs how people negotiate the flow between deep engagement and cruising, browsing, scanning how oral activities and literacy practices interpenetrate and mingle
