Situated Literacies

We need to learn how to study literacy at the "consumption junction" (Cowan).

We need to develop a broader and richer sense of the context or scope of "the task:" what people are in fact doing when they are reading, writing, making meaning.

We need to attend more closely to:
  • how iconic significations work with verbal signs

  • how people negotiate the flow between deep engagement and cruising, browsing, scanning

  • how oral activities and literacy practices interpenetrate and mingle
