I left the kids to their own sleepy devices, and went into the station. I was early for the freight office. On an old scale, I weighed myself for a nickel, an extravagance, I thought. The needle swung over to 268 pounds, another exaggeration. The kids were wandering around grubbing for food or something, and I waved them over. We switched off on the scale, getting my nickel's worth. Jack, age 6, weighed 190, and Jill, 14 and pencil thin, weighed 212. Then we all piled on together and the scale read Bust, so we all piled off. The machine chugged and clunked and spat out a card that read Your Place is in the Home. We were all a long way from our place just then. The freight office said I'd received no packages
