Car activities were few and wearing thin. I thought some books might be a help. Jill read and re-read a romance novel she'd had from the beginning. I figured she could use an alternative vision. And Jack, he should be learning to read, it seemed to me. He was plenty bright enough. But we didn't have money for extras such as books, so I had a thought we'd stop by a library and check out some books. Of course, this plan had some problems. We did not have a permanent address and if we did it wouldn't be in New Hampshire, but I knew libraries to be fairly liberal with regard to identification, in keeping with their mission as promoters of literacy, especially among the homeless and indigent, a group we resembled in too many ways. So the kids gathered together some books - several space adventures for Jack, beyond his expectable abilities, but aim high, I figured, and more romances for Jill. We stepped to the check-out counter, looking just like the other families, mostly father-led here at the library, I noticed. Quality time was in progress. The mood was good.
