In a town like Ely or Elko, Jack and Jill, through long urging, forced me to go into the Jack Rabbit Casino and gamble away their accumulated coins. From the way they handed their money over, it was clear they expected me to dispense with the quarters and dimes, not multiply them. They would be disappointed if I came back with any money. I would have failed. Perhaps they understood gambling better than the average gambler. Inside the casino, it was cool and dark. I knew slot machines to be the most efficient way to lose money, so I stood before them, one at a time in order: quarters, dimes, nickels. I dropped the coins and found I was enjoying myself. A low but winning combination of cherries and bells would come up and a few nickels would fall to the tray and I'd scoop them up and feed them back in until I'd lost all but the pennies.
