Jack and Jill were fighting in the park, then in the backseat, then in a cafe, then
in the car again. Jack was teasing Jill, spitting and threatening to barf. Jill was
pounding Jack on the shoulder. Stop it, I said from the front. They ignored me.
Stop fighting, I said. Jack hawked a crackling loogey, and Jill balled her bony fist,
readying to clobber him. I'll kill us all, I said, maybe just audible to them, and I
swerved violently. You're driving me crazy, so we all might as well die. For a
second, I was serious, not the second of decision before I swerved, but after the
tires began to whine, a second of wanting to kill us all. The kids laughed in back,
having stopped fighting. Wheee. I recovered control. They stared out the windows.
No, no. We never crash, not so much as a nick. We never die. It never ends.
