despite the stones of this fortress
the fragmentary view 
through arrow-slits

slices of sky and ocean
the comfortable solidity of these rocks
carved and piled by our unwitting hands
against what dangers


despite the mortality of kings
cowing us to insignificance
and the protected treatise on the life-span of angels
which only fools permit themselves to read
