Navigating a Virtual World Without Panoramas

This test project presents a limited tour of the "Hollow Mountain" Bryce environment introduced last week. The navigation scheme is based not on QuickTime panoramas but on static views (JPEG images) contained on separate pages.

On each of these pages, the viewpoint image is surrounded by four chevron graphics that mark navigation options. Blue chevrons indicate that the option is active; gray chevrons mean the option is not available. In some cases the pages also include imagemapped hot spots. Each page also contains a space for written text.

The four navigation links work as follows:

Right Moves the current viewpoint 90 degrees to the right.
Top Advances to the a viewpoint visible straight ahead -- or in cases where more than one distinct viewpoint is discernible ahead, to whichever point has been chosen as a default.
Left Turns the current viewpoint 90 degrees to the left.
Bottom Reverses the current angle of view.

See the Notes for a detailed discussion of the production scheme behind this project.
