Recording with SoundForge XP

If you want to digitize your own sound recordings, you may use one of the three audio-equipped PCs in the Hypermedia Room. (The three machines without speakers attached have no sound cards.) Log on and do the following:

  1. Launch SoundForge XP from Start>Programs.

  2. Select Special>Record in SoundForge.

  3. Click the Remote button in the Record dialog window. This will switch to a simplified version of SoundForge that is designed to work with external programs.

  4. Insert an audio CD into the CD drive.

  5. Go to Programs>Accessories>Multimedia>CD Player. This will launch a standard Windows audio CD controller. Select a program and play.

  6. On the SoundForge Remote panel, click the red Record button. Click Stop when you have finished your recording.

  7. You may save the resulting file in any of the formats available in SoundForge. If you intend to continue working on a Windows machine, Windows Audio (.wav) is probably the best choice.

If you want to record from cassette tape, you'll need a portable tape player (e.g., a Walkman) and a patch cord with a standard mini-headphone jack at both ends.

Look at the back of the PC you are using. Find the card slot where the wire from the speakers goes in. There are three headphone jacks there, color-coded green, red, and black. The speakers go into the green jack. The patch cord goes into one of the other two; you'll have to determine which by process of elimination.

Once you have patched in your tape player, hit play and repeat the steps above, using the tape source in place of the CD source.
