Position Paper 1

Learning from Misfortune

Having thought for some time about the possible causes of the dot-com collapse, assess the implications of this development. What does it tell us about the relationship between property interests and information technologies; or about the behavior of capital markets? What does it reveal about our understanding of information technologies and the ways they fit (or fail to fit) into our everyday lives? Most important, what does the failure of (some) dot-coms mean for the future of information business, and/or for the near-term future of business in general?

Express your answer in a brief, insightful essay of 500-750 words. Extensive research is not required, but you should be prepared to back up factual assertions with citations (ordinary sources such as newspapers will do). Include a list of sources if necessary.

Due at class September 6.
