Announcements

This is the Web site for Publications Design 664, Hypermedia Production, taught in the fall semester of 2000 by Stuart Moulthrop. Watch this space for important announcements during the term. See the syllabus for the schedule of meetings, readings and assignments. A class list is also available.

Week 11

I have once again made some minor chances to the syllabus: the McCloud reading originally assigned for November 11 is deferred until November 18; the Cluetrain reading set for that meeting has been dropped.

We will use the extra time for a conclusive discussion and vote on certain design issues. I will ask you to decide whether you want a uniform font and leading specified for all articles, and whether you want color choices to be limited to a single set of options.

Decisions we reach on November 11 are final. Please use the discussion list or e-mail if you would like to advocate one way or the other.

Week 9

I've announced a change in the technical demonstrations, adding a weekly lab session (Wednesdays at 7 PM in the Hypermedia Room). See your e-mail and/or the Astro listserv for details.

I've put up a universal footer test page on this site.

Aimee has posted a listing of color schemes received so far.

Week 7

See the listserv archives at Astro.ubalt.edu for important questions and answers about the current assignment. You do not need to be registered for the list in order to read the archives.

Correction: I've corrected some ambiguities in the second set of Ground Rules concerning page width. Please see the current version of the document, which supersedes the handout you received on October 7.

Week 6

I announced revisions to the syllabus on the class listserv before I left town last week. If you haven't seen the current syllabus, please do so now. Some highlights:

  • Technical Assignment 2 isn't due till next week, October 14;

  • Technical Assignment 4 has been dropped;

  • I've suspended the readings in McCloud and Cluetrain until we're done with Topic Articles;

  • There's no technical demo this week; second half of class will be devoted to design strategy for the pub and to discussion of work in progress on Technical Assignment 2;

  • The (ungraded) assignments for October 7 are not affected by these changes.

Week 4

  • Contact me by Wednesday, September 20 if you want your group assignment changed; no promises.

  • Groups should meet or confer by e-mail to discuss a Topic Article and begin shaping strategy. Next week I will ask each group to prepare a set of research questions and a brief outline of its approach. This information will be due to me in e-mail by Monday, October 2 but will not be part of your grade.

  • Begin working on Technical Assignment 2, due October 7.

  • If you like, sign up for the class listserv on Astro. We're PBDS.664.085.

  • Look over the second half of last week's technical demo to see what you can make of multiple-frame updates. All will be explained (?) this week.

  • If you are experiencing problems deleting files from Crow, notify John Venable,
  • our Hypermedia Specialist.

  • I'll be out of town and off e-mail from Wednesday afternoon until Friday evening this week.

Week 3

According to the original course plan, we were supposed to begin topic readings this week, but it's taking longer than I'd planned to organize production groups, so I'm revising that part of the plan. Groups will still do topic article presentations, but we'll start them later in the term. See the revised on-line syllabus for details. There are no changes to the schedule of meetings and readings you received at the start of the course.

Week 2

Your accounts on crow.ubalt.edu should be working. Let me know if you're experiencing any difficulties.

Week 1

Class will meet Saturday, September 2. If you miss this meeting, contact Stuart Moulthrop right away. The first technical assignment is due Wednesday, September 13.
