Final Specifications for the Term Project

As announced at the beginning of the course, 25% of your grade will be based on a term project which must be submitted by December 19. The term project gives you a chance to consolidate the basic scripting knowledge you've gained this term, and in the process to build an element for your professional portfolio.

The Term Project is to be delivered as a separate movie, not included in your How to Lingo work.

Several options are described below. If you wish to propose an original idea, you must clear it with me before the Thanksgiving holiday (November 27).

  • An arcade-style video game. Any game must include player control of action, scoring, and at least a losing outcome. If you use the "Fallout" codebase provided during the How to Lingo project, you must also include at least three levels of play or difficulty. If you create an original game, you need only build one level.

  • A more complete version of the Blackjack simulation included in How to Lingo. For the term project, you must add at least one element to the existing Blackjack game: instead of card names in text fields, you must show images of the cards dealt to the player and the dealer. For additional credit, add a betting system that lets players add and subtract from a running total of cash.

  • A Director-based version of a personal Web site, including departments for your various interests, professional accomplishments, and creative work. Projects must include at least five departments and a satisfactory navigation system. PLEASE NOTE HOWEVER that Web sites do not require much in the way of Lingo. Therefore unless a site includes features involving more than the "go to" command, it is likely to fall in the "B" rather than the "A" range.

  • A linear or interactive animation with at least 90 seconds runtime. Again, the amount of Lingo work involved will affect the grade. A simple keyframe animation with minimal scripting will probably fall in the "B" range. An animation with elements of script control may bring a higher grade.

  • A project employing Lingo 3D to construct or control a 3D model. This may be either a linear animation or an interactive. Since all 3D work in Director involves scripting, both are considered at the same level of difficulty.

  • A viewpoint-style navigation system (on the model of Myst) for a virtual environment. Vue d'Esprit fans take note. Build a world and let us explore it. I will show a demonstration of this concept shortly.
