Analysis Assignments
Each analysis assignment provides an opportunity to learn and demonstrate knowledge on the application of information architecture online. To complete each analysis assignment, students will be required to:
- Present findings to the class (internet access will be provided)*
- Prepare a 5-7 page report with illustrations from the web site.
Assignment 1 – Organization, Labeling, and Navigation Analysis (100 points)
Assignment 2 – Faceted Metadata and/or Search (100 points)
*Note: Presentation slots will be assigned to students ahead of the assignment due date. Students presenting will have his or her presentation score incorporated into their overall grade for the assignment (10 points maximum).
DCD Assignment* (100 points)
DCD students will be required to submit one additional 575-700 words (2 ½ -3 pages x 250 words per page) research/reflective assignment selected from the following advanced topics:
- Collaborative Filtering
- Mobile Devices
- Enterprise Portals
- Content Management Systems
Students should submit topic selection to the instructor by the third or fourth week of class.
Papers should include references to recent research; student reflections on successes/failures associated with the selected topic and may include recommendations on how information architecture methods or processes should improve to meet the unique demands of these areas. The word count listed includes includes cations and references.
*Note: This assignment is required ONLY for DCD students.
Competitive Analysis (50 points)
The competitive analysis will provide each group with a perspective on the online presence of english language community news papers. The purpose of this assignment is to orient groups to common features of online community and county newspapers. Students will not present findings for this project during class as a part of this assignment. A revised version of this assignment will be incorporated into the group’s final project and will be graded as a part of the final project paper and presentation.
Each group will be required to create a competitive analysis of at least 3 english-language community or county news papers with online access to content comparable to their printed news-stand content. Groups are required to compare available content and site features across the selected sites. No specific layout or format is required for this assignment. However, a printable version of the Competitive Analysis must be available for grading on student web sites.
Students may review competitive analysis formats from chapter 5 of Communicating Design for examples of competitive analysis formats for web-based projects as well as other online resources. Additional background on competitive analysis will be discussed in class.
