Web Site Set-up Assignment

The first assignment has two purposes: It establishes a common file structure for grading, and it sets a standard for attention to detail, an indispensable requirement for serious work in interactive media.

Account and Login

Every student in this class has access to student-iat.ubalt.edu, a Web server maintained by the School of Information Arts and Technologies. You'll submit your Flash work by uploading to this server.

Unless you've been told otherwise, your login is your last name without capitalization. At the first class meeting you selected an initial password for your account. Connect to student-iat.ubalt.edu using any FTP client or (Windows only) the FTP facility of Internet Explorer. Various free FTP clients are available for Windows and MacOS.

Directory Structure

When you connect via FTP to student-iat, you will be looking at the contents of your personal directory (folder). Within that directory, create a new directory named MULTIMEDIA. Open it up, and create within it SEVEN more directories with the following names: Lab1, Lab2, Lab3, Lab4, Lab5, Analysis, and Final.

Follow these instructions exactly. Do NOT use spaces in any of your directory names. Naming conventions are absolutely essential for online work, which typically coordinates the work of many hands. I will set up Web pages for grading and discussion based on the file structure outlined here. If you misname directories or files, your work will not appear, and I will reduce your grade in consequence. If you don't see your work when you follow the link from the classwork page, first check your file naming and placement. If everything looks right, contact me; I do make mistakes. However, you are responsible for detecting them.

Main Index Page

Within your Multimedia directory, place a Web page named index.htm. This page should contain the following: (1) Your name; (2) The name of this class; (3) Links to an index page within each of the seven folders you created in the previous step. Note that the server will access the index page automatically if you simply reference the directory, as in:

Lab 1.

Checking Your Work

Point your Web browser to student-iat.ubalt.edu/students/yourlogin/multimedia/, replacing "yourlogin" with your login. That should bring up your main index page. To test your subdirectories, you might want to place index page in each, altering the text to indicate the directory. Eventually, you'll replace these index pages with pages generated in the Publish operation from Flash.

Deadline

Complete this assignment before our next class. I will grant extensions if there are problems setting up your account, which occasionally happens. If you are unable to log in by Monday, February 4, contact me (smoulthrop[at]ubalt[dot]edu.
