Using Your Crow Account
Accounts and Web addresses
You have an account on the student server, crow.ubalt.edu. The login is your last name (no caps). If you have a common surname such as Smith or Jones, your login may be your first initial followed by an underscore character and your last name: for instance, a_jones. Your first password is the number sequence or string you provided on the signup form. You may change this password if you like.
You will have access both to your personal folder and the special folder called MMShare. Everyone in the class can read or copy from this folder; only the instructors can upload to it.
When you connect to Crow you will see several folders in addition to MMShare. You have full privileges only on the folder that corresponds to your login. You must open this folder before you can upload.
The World-Wide Web address for pages stored in your Crow directory will be:
http://crow.ubalt.edu/mm/[yourlastname]/[pagename].htm
FTP programs
Many people use specialized programs such as WS-FTP (Windows) or Fetch (Macintosh) to handle file transfer. Such programs have enhanced displays and let you do useful things such as automating the login process.
However, if you use a Windows PC you may use any version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later in place of an FTP client.
In the address bar at the top of the browser window, where you would normally type a Web address starting with http://, type instead ftp://crow.ubalt.edu. This will begin an FTP session on Crow. You'll see a dialog box where you'll enter your login and password. To upload and download using the browser, simply drag and drop the files you want to move to or from local folders or the desktop.
Macintosh versions of IE cannot perform file transfer. If you are running OS-X you might consider the command-line FTP service included with the operating system; but this is not recommended unless you know something about UNIX command lines.
Most Mac users in this class will probably be better off with Fetch, an inexpensive FTP client for any version of MacOS including OS-X. You can download a copy for $25 from Fetch Softworks. A 15-day free trial version is offered, but please do not abuse this privilege with serial downloads.
Fetch is installed on all Graphics Lab computers.
