Assignment 1: Index Page

Due Friday, February 7 at 8:15 PM

The first assignment has two purposes: It establishes a common file structure for peer reviews and grading, and it sets a standard for attention to detail, an indispensable requirement for multimedia work.

Follow these instructions carefully even if they seem tedious. Future assignments will not give such minute directions but will instead offer groundrules and outlines on which you may elaborate. For this assignment, however, it's important that you follow the recipe precisely.

  1. Using the editor of your choice, create a text file called index.htm. In this file, set up the HTML code for a Web page with the following features:

    1. A title container surrounding the phrase: "[YourLastName] Assignments"; fill in your last name;

    2. A white background;

    3. A table 600 pixels wide containing 6 rows.

  2. In the first row of your table, set up a cell with a COLSPAN of 2 and the attribute VALIGN="TOP".

  3. In the first cell of row 1 of your table enter an <IMG> tag to include a graphic called banner.jpg which is 600 pixels wide and 70 pixels high. The source file for this graphic is located in a folder called MMShare which will be on the same level of hierarchy as the folder that will contain the page you are presently building. (That is, you need to go up one level and down into MMShare to access the graphic.)

  4. Write an anchor container (<A HREF, etc.>) linking the banner graphic to the page index.htm within the MMShare directory.

  5. Still within the first row and cell of your table, include an H1 heading that reads: "Assignments by [YourName]". Fill in your name.

  6. Set up two cells in the second row of your table. Set VALIGN in the first cell to TOP. In that cell place an <IMG> tag that calls the banner JPEG again, but this time set dimensions to 300x35.

  7. Set up an anchor container around the image tag you just wrote, linking this image to a page called Assignment2.htm. This page will be installed in a directory called Assignment2 which you will create within the directory that holds the present (index) page. Be careful not to include spaces in either the page or the directory name.

  8. In the second cell of row 2, set up a paragraph container (<P></P>) and within it write the following text: "Notes for Assignment 2".

  9. Repeat Steps 6-8 for the next three rows of your table, changing the appropriate tags and text to refer to Assignments 3, 4, and 5.

  10. In the sixth and final row of your table, place a single cell with COLSPAN="2" and ALIGN="CENTER". Enter into this cell the phrase "Main Index" and link this phrase to the index page in MMShare.

  11. Using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program of your choice, connect to crow.ubalt.edu. Your login is your last name, no caps, and your initial password is the 4-digit code you gave at the first class meeting. (If you have a common surname such as Smith or Jones, your login may be your first initial, followed by an underscore character, and your last name: for instance, a_jones.) You will be connected to the class folder on Crow. You'll see several folders inside, including one that matches your login. One this folder. Upload your index page. Be sure to upload as text or ASCII. For this assignment you will only deal with text files, but later assignments will involve graphics and Shockwave files (binaries) as well. If you are using Fetch, please be sure the mode for non-text files is set to Raw Data. This is the default setting but if you are using a lab machine, another user may have changed it.

  12. Launch a Web browser and go to crow.ubalt.edu/MM/yourlastname/ (filling in your last name). You should see your index page. Check to be sure all the images are visible and that the table is properly constructed.

  13. Use your FTP client to create four new directories within your personal directory. Name these directories Assignment2, Assignment3, Assignment4, and Assignment5. Again, be careful not to include spaces.

  14. Still in your FTP client, go back up one level and open the folder called MMShare. Find the file called dummy.htm. Transfer this file to some convenient location such as your desktop, C drive, or Zip disk.

  15. Go back into your personal directory and open the directory called Assignment2. Transfer dummy.htm into this directory and change the name of dummy.htm to Assignment2.htm. Again, no spaces.

  16. Repeat Step 15 for assignments 3, 4, and 5, installing and renaming the dummy file in the appropriate directories.

  17. Quit your FTP client and launch your Web browser. Go to crow.ubalt.edu/MM/yourlastname (filling in your last name). Test all the links, including those in the first and last rows.

  18. When you are satisfied that your page is complete and error-free, send e-mail reporting success. Don't forget this step!

    Image of correctly configured page. Small variations are acceptable, such as visible borders around linked images or layout table. (The year on the title graphic has been corrected.)
