Overview of course:

This course looks at the design principles and challenges underlying games and interactive simulations designed to be used collaboratively or in situations of simultaneous use, from multiplayer console games to massively-multiplayer Internet games and their associated virtual communities. Assignments include development of multiplayer games and systematic study of Internet game communities.

 

The approach is three pronged. Lessons will cover items under three major topic lines:

  1. Multiplayer online game (MOG) design
  2. The technologies that support MOGs
  3. The communities that are developed around them

Expectations:

 

  • Electronic Devices: All non-laptop electronic devices (For Example: cell phones, pagers, blackberries, ipods, etc.) are prohibited in class.  In other words such devices must me deactivated or left elsewhere.  Please be considerate of your fellow classmates and take all personal calls, SMS, emails etc, outside of class time.  If you must be notified of an event during class time (birth, deaths, accidents, life issues, etc.) please make arrangements with the instructor before class time.
  • Etiquette: Students must be prompt, courteous, civil, honest, and original.  All conduct in class should be respectful to both your classmates and instructor, please consult the UB Student handbook and be aware of and act in accordance with its contents.
  • Late delivery of work policy: All work is due on the date specified before the start of class. Lateness will cause the letter grade to degrade by one grade per day. Exceptions will only be honored if they have been negotiated with the instructor prior to the due date.
  • Originality of Work: Plagiarism, Copying of others work and misrepresentation of the authorship of any file or document will result in an automatic failure and disciplinary action.
