Maestri on Lathe Modeling

Lathe modeling is a particularly powerful technique, and very useful for the current assignment. Maestri gives a good demonstration in his video, but it can be hard to remember the steps; so here they are:

1. Switch to the Front viewport.

2. Select Curves from the create palette. Create a line by clicking and moving the mouse. Sketch the outline of one side of a bottle.

3. Edit splines along the bottle outline to tweak the curve. Delete unneeded points.

4. Select the bottle outline and apply the Lathe modifier. Go to the Modifiers menu and select Path/Spline Editing, and under that, Lathe.

5. Check the Parameters rollout under the Lathe modifier. Switch Align from Center to Minimum.

6. Further modify the bottle shape by editing splines, if desired.

7. Change to the Perspective viewport. Notice that the bottle appears to be inside out. Check the button called Flip Normals in the Lathe modifier rollout.

8. Go to the control panel for the Perspective window. Find the Configure option. Select Force Two-Sided.

9. Render. You have a viable wine bottle. Apply a glass or semi-transparent texture for best effect.
