APPLIED SIMULATION
COSC330.SG1
Fall 2007
-Ventrilo Information-
Server: 69.12.74.141
Port: 4143
Homework
Yes, there is first-night homework. It's quite a lot, really, but necessary in order for the rest of the semester to flow smoothly.
Basically, the assignment is everything you read on the Requirements page, so go there for the full scoop on the what's, why's, and how's.
-
Set up your student server account. Put a cosc330 folder therein. This will be where you store your files.
-
Download and install Second Life. Create your avatar and work through the tutorial island.
- While in Second Life, send a "friend" invitation to Bahaar Babcock.
-
Download, install, and configure Ventrilo, including your speaker / microphone.
-
Attend a practice Ventrilo session before class to make sure it works.
-
- Let me know your name. (It should be obvious, I know. Nonetheless...)
- Let me know your email address. (I know, I know)
- Let me know your Second Life name so I can match your two lives up.
Scavenger Hunt #1
(Ok...I grant this is just a bit of silliness but hopefully will be fun. Every week (if I can think of things) I'll give out a item that I want you to try to find. You can pay for it with Linden dollars if you choose to, but I'm thinking that trying to find it for free will be more fun. Find the item, then bring it / wear it / show it during the next Second Life session! The person with the most nifty version will win....our admiration.)
The first one should be easy. Find new clothes! That's shirt, pants, shoes. You may substitute dress for the shirt and pants, if you choose. (Yes, the men can--if they're brave enough--model a dress for us!)
Second Life Class Photo
This is not an assignment as such but it'd be nice to do it and you'll be happy you did. Once you get into Second Life and get your avatar looking the way you'd like take a screenshot of him/her and email it to me. I'll compose a "class shot" and post it on the web site. The Spring 2007 class had their picture put in the Baltimore Sun newspaper! So anything can happen.
To make it easy on me try do to the following:
- Ttry to find a place in the Grid in which you can back your avatar up against a solid-colored background. Preferably, a color that is not close to what your avatar is wearing. This will make it easier for me to cut you out of the image.
- Then use the ALT key and the mouse to swing the camera around to the front.
- Once everything's the way you like it click the Snapshot button at the bottom of the screen.
- A new window will appear. Set the image size to 800 x 600, and crank the image quality to 100!
- Click the radio-button for Save snapshot to hard drive.
- Click the Save button at the bottom of the little window.
- A new window may pop up asking you where to save the file and what to call it. Fill in the information and save it.
- Now email that picture to me!
