Final Project: Game Concept
Due on the server December 19 by 5:00 PM.
Assignment
The final project for this class is a preliminary game design document, a relatively brief description of a game you dream about, and would someday like to build. Assume your audience for this document is a game design professional, someone who can decide whether or not to allocate funds to your project. The document must cover the following sections. Except for the first, each section will probably need at least one long paragraph (probably several). You may also include additional sections, sketches, or concept art. Working prototypes are not allowed.
I. Elevator Pitch
Convey your game concept in a single sentence.
II. Platform and Genre
What kind of game is this? For what technology or platform(s) is it intended? What existing games does it resemble? What sort of player are you trying to reach? How significant is this market?
III. Game World
Describe the world or environment of your game. Where does action take place? Is the space two or three dimensional? Real or fantastic? How do features of the environment affect play? How many levels do you envision? How are levels constituted and identified?
IV. Characters and Story
What roles or characters are available to the player? Who are the important NPCs or bosses? In what story do these characters participate? Is there a quest? What is its goal? If your story has some other kind of structure, what is it? What complications or tensions must the player resolve in order to advance and win? Are there multiple winning outcomes?
V. Game Mechanics
How will people play your game? How can player characters move through the world? How do they converse, fight, or otherwise engage with NPCs? You may want to go into detail about controller buttons and functions here. What bonus powers and level-ups are available? Will there be a multi-player mode? Will on-line play be supported?
VI. Deciding Factor
Why should we develop this game, instead of someone else's? What makes it different from precursors and competitors? Why will people buy the game? Why will it make the company money?
VII. Additional Comments (Optional)
Include any additional description and arguments for your game concept.
Deliverables
Prepare your document in MS-Word or HTML format. Name it yourLastName.Concept.doc, or if you are using HTML, index.htm. Place the Word document or HTML files in a new directory called FINAL within your personal folder on student-iat. As usual, failure to follow these instructions carefully will result in a lower grade.
