Final Project Assignment

Usability Final Project

Objective:

Testing and locating usability errors in computer games is but the first step in the process. Getting them fixed is the issue. To practice this process, students will work together in teams of 2-4 to design and build a game using Flash, XNA, or any other game creation software. They will then undertake an iterative design process to improve the usability of their game.
Process:
  1. You will complete this task in teams of 2-4.
  2. Design a game concept and build the game.
  3. Look at this game from a usability standpoint and note any problems you discover.
  4. Design an Think-Aloud usability test. Recruit 5 people from each of the special populations we studied. Observe each player as they play the game. It will be helpful to do this with a partner from the class so that one can observe and one can take notes.
  5. Conduct one test, then modifiy your game to improve usability as according to what you learned from testing. Repeat until all 5 people have playtested the game.
  6. At least one think-aloud test must be video recorded.
  7. Design a questionnaire for playtesting. Use the sample we discussed as a guide. Recruit 5 friends or classmates to play the game and afterwards administer the questionnaire anonymously. There are no restrictions on the composition of this group.
  8. Prepare a testing report that describes any and all usability mishaps encountered in your testing AND the steps you undertook to improve these issues. A sample will be provided..
Deliverables: All items will be posted on your team leader's student-iat account.
  1. A description of your game design (profile.html)
  2. A completed, usable game (game.zip) if XNA or (game.html) if Flash.
  3. A testing report (testReport.html)
  4. An AVI file of a representative of a Think Aloud Testing session. (mishap.avi)

You must use these names. Failure to do so may result in your work being considered late.

Due Date:
Preliminary games must be finished December 2. Final reports and improved games are due December 20.
