Setting Up Your Web Page

This very simple assignment is worth 10% of your course grade(!). Set up a basic Web page to serve as the framework for your homework graphics this term. You don't even need to know how to write HTML, but you do need to follow these directions correctly and completely.

  1. Follow the link in this sentence to the starter page myPage.txt. Copy the text you see in your browser window.

  2. Paste the text from your browser window into a blank document in a text editor, such as TextPad (Windows) or TextEdit (MacOS). Save the new document as index.htm. Be SURE you are saving in TEXT-ONLY mode, not something like Rich Text Format (RTF).

  3. Edit the new index page, substituting your name where you see *INSERT YOUR NAME* in the document. Save your changes.

  4. Using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client, log on to the FTP server student-iat.ubalt.edu. Your login name is your last name, an underscore character, and your first initial (so Izzy Bright would be bright_i). Your password is your seven-digit UB student number, printed on the back of your ID card.

  5. You'll see a directory listing for your files on student-iat. Add a new folder (subdirectory) called COSC160. No spaces!

  6. Open the new folder COSC160; upload your index page into that folder.

  7. Create another subdirectory in the COSC160 folder. Name this one gfx.

  8. Locate or create an image to serve as your signature graphic. The dimensions of this image should be at least 500 pixels by 500 pixels. Save this image in Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format. Name it signature.jpg.

  9. Upload the graphic file signature.jpg to the gfx subdirectory.

Be sure to TEST YOUR WORK. Do this by pointing your browser to student-iat.ubalt.edu/students/yourlogin/COSC160/. (Replace yourlogin with your login name.) You should see your index page. You should be able to follow the first link from that page to your signature graphic. The second link will not be functional.
