Homework 10-15-09
More filters, effects, and compositing! Choose an option.
Option A
See the sample images at right for examples of possible solutions.
Download the source archive for Option A. (It is not required for Option B.) When you unzip the Archive, you will find a folder containing ten images, all at 667x667 pixels (72 ppi). Some are JPEGs, some are Portable Network Graphics (PNG), with transparent backgrounds.
Build a composite, layered image using at least THREE of these sources in any configurations you like. Your work should include at least one layer with a non-default Blending Mode, and at least one layer in which a Filter is applied to the image. You may want to use Smart Object layers, though this is not required.
Your finished graphic must be 667x667 pixels, in JPEG format (see below). Note this will mean collapsing your layers, so save the Photoshop format version (.psd) before you save as JPEG. You do not need to upload the Photoshop version.
If you like, you may build a series of images: just add appropriate links on your home page.
Option B
Create a piece of original art with a video game theme or connection, imitating the style of one of these artists:
Obviously, you'll want Photoshop filters and layer compositing to get the job done; however, there are various ways to approach this assignment. You could create (or modify) a game poster or concept sketch in the style of one of these artists. You could ask, "What if Edward Hopper worked for Bungie?" and generate some of his hypothetical concept art. Or, whatever.
You may use one of the images linked above as a design cue. However, the styles of these four artists are highly various. If you wish to substitute another image from the same artist (or from a different artist), feel free, but include a link to that image on your home page.
Submission Instructions (Both Options):
Save your final image from Photoshop in JPEG format. Name this image 101509.jpg. Upload this file to the gfx subdirectory of your COSC160 directory on the student server, as in previous assignments. Add a link to the index page of your COSC160 directory pointing to your work.
If you have more than one image for this assignment (e.g., multiple solutions for Option A, or an alternative design cue for Option B), add links as appropriate. You can use any names you like for additional image files.
As always, I will not grade work unless it is presented according to specifications. Check your site and be sure your work is properly linked.
