A Geographical Information System (GIS) designed to manage a massive environmental remediation program at the Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES) in Lakehurst, New Jersey

Audience

Environmental engineering staff at the NAES

"I have got to get this report ready for the EPA by yesterday"

Objective

Initial objective was to enable environmental engineering staff at the NAES deal with the huge amounts of data generated by a massive environmental remediation operation comprising over 44 superfund sites located within the base.

How

Conducted contextual inquiry sessions with environmental engineering staff members

Used an Oracle database, ArcInfo GIS and a Trimble GPS system to create a custom developed solution capable of supporting the various data import, data storage, analysis and reporting requirements of the environmental remediation process

Results

ENVEIS succeeded in its goal of managing the remediation process and the successful implementation led the environmental engineering department to expand the use of the system to the management of the entire utility infrastructure of the base
